Fashion Design Department went Industrial Visit to Kancheepuram (Kanchivaram)

Department: Fashion Design – L4
Place of Industrial Visit: Kancheepuram (Kanchivaram)
Date: 14- Mar -2014
Students of L4 were taken to Kanchivaram to have the look at the various processes followed to manufacture authenticate Kanchivaram silk sarees. The students were taken to various hubs like yarn sourcing, marketing, yarn dyeing, warping, preparatory process and weaving, where they wondered to see the manufacturing of a poem in 6 yard which is one of the prestigious sarees from Traditional Indian textiles. Also they had a questionnaire session with weavers of Kanchi silk saree during which the students gathered more clarity about the manufacturing process.

Student's Testimonials:

Shamni
First, we saw the process of making the sarees — how the weft and warp yarns are interlaced to form the fabric. We saw the looms and the process of making the weft yarns. And we also learnt the difficulties the workers are facing in this industry. We saw the dying process of silk yarns. They used chemicals for dying process but they weren’t willing to let out the name of the chemical. We saw the punch cards which are used to create designs in the sarees. We also went to a shop where they sell dyed yarns. The owner of the shop gave us more information about Kanchivaram silk sarees.

Pooja
As we were learning everything in a theoretical way, having a live look at the working process made us understand the method very clearly. We had a nice experience and an opportunity to interact with the weavers. We are looking forward for more such industrial visits in the future. I feel really thankful to our faculty Mr. Rajesh Kumar for creating this opportunity for us.
