Remarkable Growth of the Indian Gaming Industry

While the fascination towards digital games has taken a leap, so is the Indian Gaming industry. All segments of the industry, ‘PC and Digital’, ‘Mobile’ and ‘Console’, are experiencing a rapid growth. As per the FICCI-KPMG Indian Media and Entertainment Industry Report 2013, the gaming industry with a revenue of 15,000 crores in 2012 is expected to grow to a 42,000 crore industry by 2017.

Sand Sculpting Skills of IMAGE and ICAT Students Benefitted the Chennai Traffic Police

On account of the Road Safety Week, the students of IMAGE and ICAT joined hands with the Chennai Traffic Police in creating public awareness on road safety. The students created sand sculptures at two locations: Marina Beach (shore in Gandhi statue and Kannaki statue) and Elliot’s Beach to pass on various road safety messages. At the Elliot’s beach, the sculpture was created in the shape of a helmet with a depiction of human brain at one side and a human chain at the other to convey the importance of wearing helmet. The sculptures at the Marina beach depicted safe driving, ills of drunken driving and use of mobile phones while driving.

Pongal Celebrations at ICAT, Chennai

To uphold the tradition of Pongal (4-day harvest festival in Tamil Nadu) and Makara Sankranti (winter harvest festival celebrated throughout India), the staff and students of ICAT, Chennai held a celebration on 13 January, 2015. The celebration was held in a traditional style with staff and students cooking sweet pongal in a clay pot using wood fire and decorating the place with rangoli. The traditional games that are usually played during this festival, like Uriyadi (smashing a hanging pot blind folded), tug of war etc was also organized for the students. The students whole-heartedly participated in all the games and enjoyed the celebration. The celebration was followed by the distribution of sweet pongal and sugarcane.

Study Tour to Hampi.

The Advertising Department of ICAT, Bangalore organized a study tour to Hampi from 11th to 14th of December, 2014. The main objective of the tour was to enable the students to master their photography skills for the Photo Communication module, and also to understand the art and culture of the place.

The students were very excited to photograph the spectacular natural view of river Tungabhadra, craggy hill ranges and open plains, with widespread physical remains. They also explored their photography skills with the Vitthla temple that has the most exquisitely ornate structure on the site and represents the culmination of Vijayanagara temple architecture. They also photographed the secular buildings like the Queen’s Bath and the Elephant Stables that represent a highly evolved multi-religious and multi-ethnic society.

Photography Tour to Varanasi.

A Photography tour to Varanasi was organized by ICAT Design & Media College for the UG Photography and Photography Club students of ICAT, Chennai. During the ten-day trip (8 Dec, 2014 to 18 Dec, 2014), the students enjoyed photographing one of the world’s oldest living cities. They enjoyed the morning and evening boat ride on the Ganges river and marvel at the Ghats, stone steps leading to the riverbank used for centuries by devotees as bathing and cremation sites.

Along with capturing the beauty of Varanasi, the students interacted with the people of Varanasi and learned about India’s ancient spiritual traditions – Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism as they walked through Varanasi’s old city with an expert guide.

VISIT TO INDIAN FOREIGN LANGUAGE UNIVERSITY.

Our UG and PG students of VFX along with their faculties visited EMMRC (Education Multimedia Research Center) on 16 December, 2014, as part of CMP module. The aim of the visit was to get firsthand experience in handling sophisticated film production equipments/techniques like camera, live shooting, recording and editing.

Students’ Showcase of Life-Size Games

The students of L4 Interactive Media at ICAT Design and Media College, Chennai, showcased their life-size games in three different primary schools in Chennai, on 19, 20 and 23 December, 2014. The games were designed by the students as part of their ‘Professional Context Technology & Communication Methods’ module.

The ICAT students first enthusiastically explained their game play, game rules, winning and losing conditions, number of players, chances, obstacles, coins and the power ups to the school students. Guided the school students to play the games. The school students enjoyed the games as they involved IQ improving skills. The school students celebrated when they won each chance. They also tried the games again and again, even after losing a chance, to enjoy the fun factor involved in the game.

Students’ Showcase of Life-Size Board Games.

As part of the academic project, three students of L4 Interactive Media at ICAT, Bangalore went to Samved School (managed by AV Education society), Bangalore on 22 December, 2014.The three students, Abhishek Panchal (GDD), Satyam Mishra (DUAL), and Vignesh R (GMD) presented their life-size games, ‘Sundae Special’, ‘Honey-Comb Puzzle’ and ‘Spin to the End’ respectively to the school students.

The students of class 6, 7 and 8 participated in the show. First, our students divided the participants into three groups. Then, explained about the fun of life-size games and explained the rules of each of the game to the respective participants. Then, common questions were asked to the participants and whoever answers it first was selected to play the games first. This way, the players were selected randomly.

As part of the celebrations, the students of PG Advertising Design and PG Multimedia Technologies organized various events on 18th and 19th of December, 2014, in which the students from the other departments participated with great gusto.

On the 18th of December, the students organised a Treasure Hunt themed – “Santa gets kidnapped! Find the black sheep to find the treasure”. About 15 teams participated in the Treasure Hunt and the students of 1st year B.Sc. Media Technologies emerged as winners.

Real-Time Design Training at Channapatna.

ICAT, Chennai organized a real-time design training at Channapatna (near Bangalore) for the L4 Interior Design students. The training was organized as part of the “Principles of Graphic and Design” module, in which the students were required to create an interior artefact inspired by Channapatna toys. The team of 22 students and 2 faculties left to Channapatna on 16 December, 2014, where they first understood how the toys are made and the reasons for it to die as an art form.

The students then designed their own artefact considering the feasibility of creating it in real-time. They then interacted with the artisans at Channapatna, explained their sketches and prototypes that have made, and got the artefact created by the artisans. In the factory, the students learnt the application and the design difficulties, and also got a hands-on experience in working with lacware machines.

The NASSCOM game developer conference, 2014, was held from 13 to 15 November, 2014. The three-day conference was held in Pune. Students and faculties from the game departments of ICAT attended the conference along with various professionals and students from different parts of India.

Staff and Students Watch ‘Lingaa’

The Students of B.Sc. Media Technologies, B.Sc. Multimedia, M.Sc. Multimedia, P.G. Diploma in Multimedia Technologies and P.G. Diploma in Advertising Design and the respective Staff watched the Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Lingaa’ on 13 December, 2014. It proved to be a great way to build the bonding between the staff and students.

Film Making Seminar from the Father of Malaysian Animation.

On the 13th of December, 2014, ICAT College of Design and Media hosted a seminar on “Film Making” with the Father of Malaysian Animation - Mr. Hassan Abd Muthalib. Mr. Hassan Abd Muthalib is a self-taught Artist, Designer and Filmmaker. With a career spanning over 50 years, Mr. Hassan has taught, scripted, directed, and produced many commercials, animated filmlets, and television content.

During the seminar, Mr. Hassan shared his vast knowledge and learning that he has acquired from his journey spanning over 50 years. His talk delved into the history of Cinema in Malaysia with focus on Film language, and developments in Cinema and the Animation Film Industry in Southeast Asia from 1949 to the present. It revealed the secrets of effective visual storytelling that no book tells us.

Display of Life-Size Games in Defense Laboratories School.

Four students (Sayat Samantsinghar, Vadlamani Venkat Siva Subramanyam, Thakur Virendrasingh Maheshsingh and Bharat Kumar ) of L4 UG Interactive Media of ICAT, Hyderabad displayed their 4 life-size Board Games in the Defense Laboratories school ground, Hyderabad, as part of their “Professional Context Technology & Communication Methods” module. The event was conducted on 9 December, 2014, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Our students made the school students participate in the games very interactively. The school students played all the games repeatedly and enjoyed the fun of life-size games. Our students got feedback from the school students, which would help them enhance their games. The school management was impressed with our students’ work and showed their interest to display the games again in their school premises.

PHOTOGRAPHY TRADE EXHIBITION AT HYDERABAD.

Photography is one of the most available mediums of artistic expression, which anyone can practice with just an inbuilt camera of a Smartphone. But, only a trained eye can take outstanding photos. A pool of photography events is definitively is an amazing opportunity for those who what to capture stunning photos. As a view to provide such a knowledgeable experience, ICAT Hyderabad organized a visit to Photography Trade exhibition at Jal Vihar, Necklace road on 21, 22, 23 November, 2014. As expected, the exhibition was absolutely informative with various events on underwater photography, demos of latest photography equipments, Fashion photography with live model and much more.



Film Making Workshop @ ICAT

ICAT has conducted a workshop on “Film Making” on 4 December, 2014, for the students of L5 UG VFX and 3D, and PG VFX. Around 43 students participated in the workshop that was held at the ICAT premises from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It was conducted by Mr.Vasanth Dev, Award Winner Cinematographer – FTII, Pune. He completed his education in 1977 and worked as a Director of Cinematography for 40 Feature films, 20 Ad films and a few Short films.

He is currently heading the Filmedia Literacy Forum (FLF).The goal of the workshop was to make the students understand the real time Filmmaking Process & Script Writing for Audio Visual Media. The major topics covered in the workshop were ‘Filmmaking with low budget’ and ‘Cinematography’, including the topics like camera angles and composition. It was helpful for the students to write script in a professional way and to produce PSA for an NGO as part of a module requirement for the L5 3D & VFX Students.
